Revealing

The performance, aside from being extremely entertaining and exquisitely performed, was revealing as well. When watching a movie production nowadays, the visuals are getting so effective in captivating the attention of the audience that the accompanying soundtrack becomes simply a part of the whole experience. However, witnessing the music performed apart from the visuals of the movies brought to the forefront how much skill is involved in the soundtrack. I took music for 8 years while in the public school, and I had a keen sense of the difficulty of those pieces that the symphony was playing. The performance was magnificent, as are the works of the composers who created the music. One last note: the conductor deserves an applause for his ability to appear as though he was "drawing the music out of the symphony before him and letting it join with the rest of the world". We loved it all!

The Grand Rapids Symphony performed amazingly!

I enjoyed the first part of Schubert's Great, it was a nice symphony. However, the 2nd symphony they performed was from Andrew Norman, Suspend, which was, at best, difficult to listen to. I don't know why they added this to the Schubert's Great symphony line up. I'll admit, I'm not a symphony expert or critic, I just enjoy listening to a good symphony. Anyways, Suspend went on for way too long and really dulled my senses to enjoy the remainder of the program. This is not a beautiful piece at all, it was irritating and simply unpleasant to my ears. I ended up leaving early. Not at fault at all by the Grand Rapids Symphony, they performed beautifully. I hope they exclude this piece from any future performances.

Safe, masked night of entertainment

The GR Symphony Holiday Pops concert was an exceptional and delightful date night out for me and my fiancé. The music was a great blend of classics and ‘new to me’ songs. It was not just our own local symphony, but an incredible guest pianist and song stylist, and 2 great choirs. The guest artist’s ‘20 versions of jingle bells’ was so funny and right on, and the sing-a-long provided the chance to sing with others that has been missing during the pandemic. Speaking of that, the dual requirement of presenting proof of vaccination AND mask requirement made the experience feel safe for us. It was a wonderful night out with my sweetheart.

Night on Bald Mountain

This concert was magical. Opening with Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, we were instantly enthralled. The performance of the Shostakovich cello concerto in E flat Major by Andrei Ionita was a life changing experience. This brilliant young cellist played with vigor and sophistication that totally held our attention. He played this and his encore by memory. So amazing. The night's performance ended with Shostakovich Symphony No. 1. He wrote this when he was 18. Another amazing piece by an accomplished composer before he was accomplished. We so enjoyed this magnificent concert! Thank you, Maestro Lehninger.

Beautiful performance, distracted by choking

In my decades of symphony-going, this was by far the most memorable. Incredible conducting, beautiful, swelling music, and a patron who couldn't stop shoveling snacks into his mouth. You could hear his chewing, the packaging of his snacks, and hitting his teeth. At some point, the choking began and went on for MINUTES. It is the most uncomfortable symphony experience I have ever had. The patron didn't even bother getting up, just continued to choke. Family members ignored him, and they had liquids they could have provided. Made for a very unpleasant experience. Therefore, snacks should be banned. Drinks are fine.
